Cambodian garment workers secure pay rise

Garment workers in Cambodia will receive a minimum wage of $153 from January 2017 following prolonged negotiations between their representatives, employers and the government.

The current minimum wage is $140. Sportstextiles.com reported earlier this month that local sources were suggesting that garment workers may even accept a drop in the pay level.

Employers present at the negotiations had suggested a minimum wage of $147, while the trade unions asked for $171. The former eventually accepted a rise to $148, with the government to provide the additional $5.

Cambodia’s Labour Minister, Ith Sam Hen, said he hoped the new wage represented a fair balance between employers and workers. He added that although the deal might not satisfy everyone, “it is better than what we had before”.
