Brussels-based lobbying organisation the Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industry (FESI) has joined a working group in which ministers from China and from the European Union will exchange views on intellectual property infringements.

FESI said on announcing the development that the sporting goods industry has been heavily affected by the online sale of counterfeit products. Specifically in China, rogue companies fool consumers by registering trademarks similar to those of legitimate brands, it added.

But it said the efforts of sporting goods companies to protect their intellectual property has led to a number of laws that should make e-commerce fairer.

General secretary, Alberto Bichi, commented: “This situation calls for a clear legal framework protecting both rights owners and consumers. There is a need for higher penalties to increase the deterrence effect and it is important to make it as simple as possible for rights owners to report counterfeits.”
