New guidelines for wastewater treatment from ZDHC

25/11/2016
The Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) Programme, a collaboration of 22 leading brands committed to eliminating hazardous chemicals from the textile and footwear value chain, has released a wastewater guidelines document, calling it “a unified expectation on wastewater quality for the entire textile and footwear industry”.

These guidelines build on a 2015 study that revealed the lack of a unified “set of expectations” for suppliers that discharge industrial wastewater.

Textiles and footwear production involves a large volume of water, ZDHC pointed out, that can presents a threat to people and the environment if producers fail to treat the waste correctly. It also pointed to a lack of consistency among brands with regard to what expectations they have, leading to confusion across the value chain.

The ZDHC Wastewater Guidelines constitute “a harmonised set of wastewater parameters, limit values and test methods that will ensure brands and suppliers are working to the same expectations”, the Amsterdam-based organisation said. The guidelines are free to download from the ZDHC website.

Executive director, Frank Michel, said on announcing the release that “the entire industry” should adopt the guidelines “to achieve meaningful, long-lasting impact”.
