Why Montane is an early admirer of PrimaLoft’s new product

Performance insulation and fabric developer PrimaLoft is preparing to introduce what it has called “the industry’s highest-performing blowable synthetic insulation” at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2017, which takes place in Salt Lake City from January 10-12.

Called Black Insulation ThermoPlume, the product features a blend of water-resistant PrimaLoft fibres that deliver insulating loft, wet-weather protection and compressibility, the company said in the build-up to the exhibition. It is manufactured with small, silky tufts of fibre plumes that collectively form a loose-fill insulation, replicating, PrimaLoft claims, the lightweight warmth, softness and compressibility of natural goose down.

Its construction allows for it to be blown through traditional down-blowing manufacturing equipment, simplifying the manufacturing process for brands and combining “the look and feel of down with the water-resistant performance of a synthetic”.

Chief executive, Mike Joyce, said on making the announcement that Black Insulation ThermoPlume fills “a growing demand for innovation from designers, brands and consumers looking to move away from down, without sacrificing performance”. He added: “This helps to simplify the supply chain, combat the volatility of down prices and provides peace of mind when it comes to the ethical sourcing of materials.”

One of the first outdoor brands to adopt the insulation is UK-bsaed Montane, which will feature Black Insulation ThermoPlume in its new men’s Icarus and women’s Phoenix jackets for autumn 2017. The Northumberland-based brand’s design manager, Lottie Watkinson, said the product is able to mimic natural down “more closely than ever before” but without compromising on any of the “wet-weather performance advantages of PrimaLoft”.
