“Different purpose” for Outdoor Retailer Shows

In a letter to members, the executive director of the Outdoor Industry Association (OIA), Amy Roberts, has given further explanation as to why the Outdoor Retailer Summer and Winter markets are to be brought forward, starting in 2018.

In November, sportstextiles.com reported that both shows would take place earlier from 2018, with the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market moving to June and the Winter Market running in November. This decision was made after the OIA consulted with Outdoor Retailer and Grassroots Outdoor Alliance.

In her letter, Ms Roberts said the shift in dates would result in a “different purpose” for the Outdoor Retailer shows. She explained that earlier order cycles mean they now take place after “most retailers have already made almost all buying decisions”.

She predicted that the shift to earlier dates “will offer the great majority of outdoor industry companies and retailers a clearer way to introduce and consider new product and initiate the ordering process.”

The decision was inspired by feedback from OIA members, as well as the success of the Grassroots Connect shows, which take place in early November and June. This convinced the OIA that many specialist retailers favour an earlier show.
