Covestro suspends plant closure as MDI demand picks up

16/03/2017
Polymer manufacturer Covestro has reversed a decision to close one of its factories in Spain because demand for its MDI product has picked up. MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) is a precursor for manufacturing foam materials; globally, Covestro is the largest producer of MDI.

It had intended to close its factory in Tarragona, on Spain’s east coast, by the end of 2017 but said on March 16 it was “suspending” this decision owing to “significant increase in demand for MDI”.

“This is good news for the Tarragona site and our employees,” said Andrea Firenze, Covestro’s managing director in Spain.
