Nike brings Flyknit to apparel with new sports bra

Flyknit was first unveiled at the 2012 Olympic in London, when it was used in the uppers of the running shoes worn by a number of athletes. It has since been incorporated into a wide range of footwear products, including football boots, training shoes and basketball sneakers.
The one-piece knitted upper reduces the weight of the shoe and offers increased support by creating the feeling of a “second skin” for the wearer.
Nike has developed apparel inspired by the Flyknit concept, but the creation of the Nike FE/NOM Flyknit Bra represents its first direct use in an apparel product.
The product was devised after the NikeWomen design team asked athletes for the qualities they needed in a sports bra. They told Nike that it needed to provide total support for a variety of activities and keep them cool and dry without compromising on comfort. Nike’s innovation team joined the conversation and offered Flyknit technology as a potential solution.
The Nike FE/NOM Flyknit Bra is constructed using two single-layer panels made from a nylon-spandex yarn that form fits to the shape of the wearer’s body. The two layers are assembled without a seam, which reduces the amount of material needed. Nike has explained that the new product is 30% lighter than any other sports bra it offers. It also said that some of its other high-support sport bras need as many as 41 pieces, compared to the two required for the Nike FE/NOM Flyknit Bra.
