Patagonia offers licence for vest design to protect ‘iconic surf break’

The PSI (Personal Surf Inflation) vest can increase safety in big waves by inflating rapidly, says Patagonia, and the design received a US patent for its technology in 2014.
“Turning five years of research and development into a programme where we use our intellectual property to get industry members to help protect an iconic surf break is another point of difference for Patagonia’s surf business” said Jason McCaffrey, Patagonia’s director of surf.
The environment and wildlife around Punta De Lobos is being threatened by increasing tourist activity with lack of regulation and private interest to develop real estate projects along the coastline, depriving access to beaches.
“Protecting Punta de Lobos provides the perfect backdrop for the launch of our own vest to surfers who demonstrate a commitment to surfing big waves,” added Mr McCaffrey.
