UNIDO project aims to boost Egypt’s cotton industry

The United Nations International Development Organisation (UNIDO) has launched a two-year project that it hopes will help revive the Egyptian cotton industry.

It will be funded by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) and will be implemented by UNIDO, together with Egypt’s Ministry of Trade and Industry and Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation. Italian textile company Filmar will also support the project.

UNIDO has said the project will enhance the “sustainability, inclusiveness and value addition” of Egypt’s cotton value chain. This will be done by helping cotton growers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices and non-polluting production practices. The project also aims to improve national mechanisms for quality assurance and organic certification.
