BASF strengthens new 3D printing business

Chemicals manufacturer BASF has completely acquired Dutch filament producer Innofil3D. The company will play a central role in BASF’s move into 3D printing.

“With this acquisition, BASF is moving one step further along the value chain and can now provide not only plastic granulate for 3D printing but also the next processing level: the filaments,” said Volker Hammes, managing director at BASF New Business.

Innofil3D, which is headquartered in Emmen, Netherlands, is a producer of high-value customised filaments that are used in fused filament fabrication, a 3D printing process that uses meltable plastic to create items layer by layer.

The acquisition follows BASF’s creation of a new division, BASF 3D Printing Solutions, which it says allows it to “pursue business opportunities in 3D printing”. It will see BASD add Innofil3D’s thermoplastic filaments to its product portfolio.

BASF has explained that Innofil3D will continue with its current business activities. Its employees will become part of the BASF 3D Printing Solutions team.

“Innofil3D’s well-filled product pipeline in combination with BASF’s plans to develop high-performance filaments will form an important foundation of BASF’s solutions for layered 3D printing,” Mr Hammes said.
