Amazon enlists Taiwanese companies for sportswear push

Online retailer Amazon has partnered with two prominent Taiwanese sportswear suppliers as it seeks to launch its own athletic apparel label, Bloomberg has reported.

The companies in question are Makalot Industrial, which manufactures apparel for Gap, Uniqlo and Kohl’s Corp., and Eclat Textile, an important supplier to Nike, Lululemon and Under Armour.

According to Bloomberg, Amazon has only recently started this project and no long-term contracts have been signed with the suppliers. The two Taiwanese companies are currently producing small quantities of products for Amazon as part of a trial, the report said.

In August, the chairman of Eclat, Hung Chen-Hai, was quoted as saying that his company intends to focus on e-commerce platforms to boost its growth. He hinted at having secured a new e-commerce customer but gave no further details, although industry analysts suggested at the time that it was Amazon.
