Adidas executive joins board of 3D technology partner
25/01/2018
The appointment is the latest stage in a partnership between the two companies. In April 2017, they unveiled the Futurecraft 4D sneaker, which was created using a process developed by Carbon that allows the easy creation of high-performance, durable polymeric products.
Adidas used the technology, known as Digital Light Synthesis, to create the midsole of the shoe. First, adidas analysed its library of running data to shape the functional zones of the midsole. It then used Carbon’s programmable liquid resin platform to create the shape. The speed of the process allowed the partners to create over 50 different lattices for the midsole before settling on the final design.
The announcement of Mr Liedtke’s appointment to the Carbon board was made on the same day that adidas released the Futurecraft 4D product at selected stores in New York. It has said it intends to release more than 100,000 pairs by the end of 2018.
“I am excited and honoured to join the Carbon Board and look forward to contributing to the company’s vision to fundamentally change how the world designs, engineers, makes and delivers customised products at scale,” Mr Liedtke said. “The unparalleled work we’ve done together to make Futurecraft 4D a reality is a proven example of the vital role digital 3D manufacturing can play in opening up endless opportunities and creativity in the future.”
