Solvay foresees Europe drought disruption

23/08/2018
Belgian chemicals manufacturer Solvay has said it expects its polyamides activities to be temporarily impacted by a severe drop in water levels along the Rhine river. This has been caused by persistent heat and drought in Central Europe.

Solvay explained that the situation is affecting raw material supplies and is causing production losses of the intermediates required for the company’s nylon and isocyanate chains.

When it made this announcement in August 16, it said it may not be able to honour all orders for adiponitrile (ADN), hexamethylene diamine (HMD), nylon salt and adipic acid (AA) as well as certain polyamide (PA) resins, fibres and compounds over the “coming days and weeks”.

It added that is was doing its utmost to mitigate the effects of this “extreme climate event” on its deliveries.
