Vivobarefoot releases more information on Primus Bio range

Minimalist footwear brand Vivobarefoot has released more details of its plans to bring to market a plant-based shoe range, Primus Bio, using plant-based polymers in the sole and upper.

Vivobarefoot has set itself the target of using 90% sustainable materials across its entire product range by 2020.

In the case of the Primus Bio range, it has now confirmed that 60% of the outsole and 30% of the upper of the shoes will be made from the Susterra propanediol-based bio-TPU that DuPont and Tate & Lyle Bio Products have developed together. These companies say Susterra propanediol uses 52% less energy than the standard petroleum-based materials used by the global footwear industry and 32% less greenhouse gas emissions.

“Sustainability is our journey and we believe that the perfect shoe has minimal interference with natural movement and minimal impact on the environment,” said Asher Clark, Vivobarefoot’s design director. “This is an exciting step in the right direction away from the single-use petroleum-based alternatives commonly used in athletic footwear and every action counts in our journey of redefining the world’s relationship with environmentally damaging materials.”

Launched in 2012, Vivobarefoot is run by Asher Clark and his cousin Galahad Clark. They are seventh-generation members of the family behind the Clark footwear brand.
