Timberland launches scheme to take back gently used clothing
08/10/2018
This initiative applies to products sold by any brand, not just Timberland.
Consumers can deliver their gently used items to Community Recycling online or at one of 65 Timberland stores across the US. Participants receive 10% off their next Timberland purchase in exchange for returning products.
All of the returned items are sent to Community Recycling facilities in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. There, they are sorted into two groups: reuse and recycling.
The partners have estimated that around 95% are likely to be appropriate for reuse and will be distributed to Community Recycling’s network of entrepreneurs in more than 50 countries, who sell them as a way to create a livelihood for themselves and their families.
Items selected for recycling will go to be grinded down for use in insulation, carpet padding and industrial rags.
“As a company of Earthkeepers, we care about the entire lifecycle of our products – from the materials we use to the people who make them and through to their end of life,” said Jim Pisani, global brand president of Timberland. “This partnership with Community Recycling expands upon the many efforts we have in place to work toward a more circular economy. It also creates environmental, social and economic value for people around the world, which is always a win.”
