Plants inspire Devan’s Moov&Cool technology

Working with previous partners at the University of Leuven and the Bakala Academy, an athletic performance centre in the same Belgian city, Devan says it has been able to confirm the benefits of the technology. It will present the test results in full at the next Performance Days (Munich, November 28-29).
Moov&Cool is a patented polymer technology, providing a cool comfort feel through a combination of durable heat absorption capacity, thermo conductivity and a moisture transfer system. In addition to fast absorption of sweat, the technology helps to manage sweat evaporation in what Devan calls “a balanced way”.
In comments before the November edition of Performance Days, the manager of Devan’s performance business unit, Dr Vanessa Daelman, said: “Where other technologies count on wind to help evaporate sweat to create a cool skin sensation, Moov&Cool uses superfluous heat produced by the body during sports performance to lower the body’s core temperature. The effect remains when the wind speed is reduced, which makes it also suitable for indoor sports.”
She said the technology will also help insulate wearers in cold weather, because the pore-like openings in polymeric layer will open less when exposed to cold, trapping more heat between the body and the fabric.
Plants were the inspiration for this, Dr Daelman explained. She said: “Plants also use small pore-like openings (stomata) on the bottom of their leaves which open and close depending on the environment they are exposed to. It allows them to manage the water reservoir in the leaves and hence their thermoregulation.”
