Alicia Ferreira de Sousa from L’École de la Maille in Paris has been announced as the winner of the inaugural adidas x Woolmark Performance Challenge award, a new competition for textile students, based on fabrics they develop using merino wool.

Ms de Sousa received the award, which included a cash prize of €10,000, at a special ceremony at Outdoor Retailer in Denver. Judges praised her entry, saying that, as an aerobic gymnast, her knowledge of the body’s movement helped her develop a fabric that could have sports apparel applications. She will spend three months as an intern at adidas.

More than 500 students from 58 universities across Europe and North America registered to take part in the competition.

“The rapid growth in demand for technical textiles has significantly boosted wool’s prominence in the sportswear industry,” said the Woolmark Company’s managing director, Stuart McCullough, on presenting the award. “The fibre’s naturally inherent qualities, such as effective odour control, superb breathability and moisture management properties, cannot be matched by any man-made fibre.”
