The Rhythm Tee is the first product from Black Diamond’s new layering system, which will include a line of baselayers and mid-layers. It refers to this system as SolutionWool.
The collection is engineered from Nuyarn, an ultralight, durable and stretchy baselayer designed for high output activities. Nuyarn fabric is constructed by wrapping a superfine Merino wool yarn around a nylon core. This enhances the wool’s natural performance and is said to dry five times faster, have 35% more stretch and be 47% stronger.
Black Diamond has also pointed to the fabric’s durability and resistance to abrasion as a reason why it is suitable for use in performance clothing.
The Rhythm Tee weighs just 95 grammes, which the brand believes makes it the lightest performance Merino tee in the world. It was tested by ultra-runner Joe Grant during an event in Colorado that saw him scale 14 mountain peaks in 49 hours. He only wore this one Merino wool T-shirt throughout.
Stuart McCullough, managing director of The Woolmark Company, said: “The ultra-light Rhythm Tee champions the notion that wool is not a heavy, winter-only fibre. By introducing the world’s lightest technical performance Merino tee along with a layering solution, more outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the performance benefits of Merino wool.”
In autumn, Black Diamond will introduce the Solution Merino Hoody for men as well as SolutionWool baselayers for both men and women. All will feature the Nuyarn stretch technology.
“Black Diamond Equipment supports the world’s most demanding users who constantly push the boundaries, so we chose Merino wool – the original performance fibre – for our upcoming spring and fall collections given its versatility, durability and natural performance benefits,” said Trent Bush, Black Diamond’s vice-president of apparel.
