Columbia CEO calls for opening of national parks

The president and CEO of sportswear brand Columbia, Tim Boyle, has taken out a full-page advertisement in The Washington Post to call for more to be done to ensure national parks in the US can remain open during the ongoing government shutdown.

The US government is currently in partial shutdown due to cross-party clashes over the content of the annual federal budget. As a result, around 25% of the government is temporarily closed.

It is also having an impact on a number of non-essential services. According to the National Parks Conservation Association, around a third of US national park sites are completely closed. Many of the ones that are open are not manned by regular park employees due to the shutdown.

In the advertisement, which was printed on January 11, Mr Boyle said: “Walls shouldn’t block access to parks, and federal workers shouldn’t be left out in the cold. Work together to open our parks.”
