Inditex and MIT look to drive sustainability in the textile industry
21/03/2019
The Spanish company, parent of fashion brands including Zara, will fund MIT research projects into areas such as the recycling of textile materials. It will also support new lines of research related to data analysis.
With this support, MIT will launch two new fellowships. The first, based in the MIT Department of Materials Science and Engineering, will promote research into sustainability, logistics and supply chain management. It aims to support the development of advanced sustainability techniques within the textile industry.
The second fellowship, which will be awarded at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, will be dedicated to research and innovation in data analysis, specifically in relation to the textile sector.
The agreement also sees the renewal of the Leaders for Global Operations course that Inditex already offers for MIT students. This programme aims to enhance the technical and management skills of the students thought experience at Inditex’s headquarters in Arteixo, Spain.
Finally, MIT and Inditex will together launch a seed fund focusing on sustainability. It will promote research initiatives between faculty members and students from MIT and their peers at universities and research institutions in Spain. Focus areas will include new textile recycling techniques and the creation of new fibres using sustainable technology.
