Posen turns to 3D printing to add wow factor at Met Gala
US-based designer Zac Posen chose 3D printing for his designs that were worn by celebrities at the Met Gala, a New York charity event famous for attendees’ outlandish outfits.

He teamed up with GE Additive and Protolabs for the creations worn by supermodel Jourdan Dunn and actresses Katie Holmes, Nina Dobrev, Katie Holmes, Julia Garner and Deepika Padukone.

Jourdan Dunn’s gown featured 21 printed ‘petals’ that took more than 1,100 hours to make.

Ms Dobrev wore a bustier finished by wet hand sanding and sprayed with a clear coat to give it a glass appearance.

Katie Holmes wore a printed palm leaf collar accessory and Julia Garner a printed headpiece.

"I dreamt the collection, GE Additive helped engineer it and Protolabs printed it," said Zac Posen.

Most the garments were manufactured at Protolabs’ US additive manufacturing facility in North Carolina, while the bustier was made in Protolabs’ German facility.

The titanium cage for the rose gown, which provides the structure on which the petals attach, was printed at the GE Additive Technology Centre in Cincinnati.
