Applied DNA makes Egyptian cotton breakthrough

03/06/2019
Applied DNA Sciences, a provider of DNA-based product authentication solutions, has announced that it has carried out successful genotyping trials to authenticate fibres made from Egyptian Pima cotton. It plans to expand this traceability platform to yarn, fabric and finished goods.

The company has said that when combined with its SigNature T DNA tagging system, along with other methods it has in development, this breakthrough will eventually allow for verification of type of cotton, the cotton’s origin and the blending of cotton fibre from ginned fibre through to finished product.

Announcing this development, Dr James Hayward, president and CEO of Applied DNA, said: “Our cotton authentication platform of SigNature T and genotyping can provide a means for quality control and compliance in supply chains. We believe that our system can provide a useful tool to enable brands and manufacturers to verify their products at any stage of the supply chain, that is more exact than other methods claiming to do the same without the same degree of precision.”
