Applied DNA partners Reliance for traceable recycled polyester

Applied DNA Sciences,  a provider of DNA-based product authentication solutions, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with India-based textile group Reliance Industries (RIL) to develop clothing made from R|Elan GreenGold fabric and Recron GreenGold recycled polyester fibre and filament powered by CertainT.

Applied DNA has demonstrated, with its supply chain partners, end-to-end traceability by tagging over 20 million pounds of recycled polyester and tracking products from fibre to finished goods.
Prior to the signing of the MOU, Applied DNA and RIL had tagged recycled polyester at RIL’s facilities in India in successful proof-of-concept studies.

Hemant Sharma, head of the polyester Business at RIL, said: “We believe that sustainability with traceability is a must and not a maybe.”

R|Elan is used by brands including Kappa and Arrow, as well as denim brands Lee and Wrangler.
“Without Applied DNA’s proprietary molecular tagging system, the uncertainty and risk is too high and the burden of proof is much harder for brands and retailers,” added Gunjan Sharma, chief marketing officer of the Polyester Business at RIL.

RIL’s Recron GreenGold fibre is made from 100% used PET bottles.
