Lenzing progresses with blockchain project

Austrian fibre producer The Lenzing Group has said its blockchain project has "the potential to offer an unparalleled level of transparency for brands and consumers" during a presentation at the Fashion Summit in Hong Kong.

It claims the technology enables brands to identify Tencel from fibre to retail and allows consumers to verify the garment composition at the point of sale by scanning the barcode with a mobile device.

Lenzing partnered technology company TextileGenesis earlier this year, and has since been working with WWF and Hong Kong-based base layer brand Chicks.

It issued blockchain-based Tencel fibrecoins to its supply chain partners. These digital tokens serve as an authentication mechanism and provide a chain of custody.

Amit Gautam, CEO & Founder of TextileGenesis, said: “This is an important milestone for the apparel industry. Our focus is to drive meaningful step-change in an industry where less than 5% of the top 250 apparel brands can track their garments back to the fibre origin.”

Lenzing is carrying out additional pilot tests over the next few months.
