Patagonia to go entirely carbon neutral by 2025
Patagonia has announced the company’s of reaching carbon neutrality by 2025 across their entire business. This will include using only renewable energy by 2020 and undertaking a range of initiatives to neutralise carbon emissions from their supply chain, which is responsible for 97% of the company’s existing carbon footprint.
In the new essay “How We’re Reducing Our Carbon Footprint,” the company acknowledges its own role in creating carbon emissions through using coal-powered machines, waterproofing treatments, plastic mailbags, transportation and more. Nevertheless, Patagonia, who closed their businesses around the globe last week so employees could attend climate marches around the world, is a recognised leader in this realm. For example, the company currently operates on 100% renewable electricity in the US and 76% globally, and currently 69% of the Patagonia line includes recycled material.
Key parts of the company’s plan include:
- Using only renewable electricity for Patagonia retail stores, distribution centers, regional and global offices and headquarters by 2020.
- Working with suppliers to convert to renewable energy.
- Increasing use of recycled fibers.
- Growing the Worn Wear program, which repairs and recycles to extend the life of products.
- Investing in regenerative organic agriculture as a source of raw materials.
The company adds that its real aim is to become “carbon positive” — that is, removing more carbon from the atmosphere than they put in.
