Patagonia collection made from remnants of end-of-life apparel
Outdoor apparel brand Patagonia, known for prioritising sustainability in its business model, has found another way to extend the life of its products. The ReCrafted collection takes usable fabrics and parts from Patagonia pieces that can no longer be repaired and turns them into new one-of-a-kind apparel and accessories.

Take the ReCrafted Down Vest (pictured), for example. Retailing online at $257, each vest is crafted from tonally-similar repurposed postconsumer Patagonia down sweater garments. Colour will vary from piece to piece and “may have slight signs of use from a previous life,” the company says, but this is part of the item’s appeal: “After all, the scars tell the story.”

Garments are sorted and salvaged at the company’s Reno Repair Center, designed in collaboration with someone who Patagonia describes “a woman who sees only potential in the things left behind”. Pieces are deconstructed and sewn in Los Angeles.

ReCrafted is part of the company’s Worn Wear program. Launched a couple of years ago, Worn Wear allows consumers to trade in and purchase used Patagonia apparel. The company will pay for traded-in items in store credit, then wash and resell them through the Worn Wear website or pop-up events and shops.
