Toray reunites with Patagonia on waterproof line
10/01/2020
The revamped Torrentshell 3L line of waterproof/breathable jackets, according to Patagonia, will offer durable rain protection with a lower environmental impact.
Toray has long supplied Patagonia fabric, though its peak may have been in the 1990s when Patagonia was said to be one of the largest volume customers for Toray’s waterproof/breathable Entrant technology.
The company said demand for this technology declined in the early 2000s as customers wanted more lighter weight, 2.5-layer fabrics. But now, industry has a renewed interest in the kind of sustainable and recycled fabrics Toray can produce.
The 2020 Torrentshell 3L line has a hydrophobic membrane, custom-designed by Toray, and the new fabric has 100% recycled face fabric. The line is also Fair Trade Certified sewn.
The new line’s tagline is “Never Gets Old” which Patagonia said reflects the line’s sustainability in two ways: its 100% recycled face fabrics and a design commitment from both companies to build “durable rainwear that can last customers a lifetime or longer”.
