Freudenberg unveils 100% biodegradable padding

29/01/2020
Germany-based Freudenberg Performance Materials Apparel is launching what it describes as a fully biodegradable padding made from sustainably-produced cellulose fibre. The padding, the company said, can completely degrade in soil within 60 days.

Called comfortemp Lycocell padding, the insulation is designed for the needs of high-performance thermal insulation in sports and outdoor clothing. The padding was developed in collaboration with fibre manufacturer Lenzing, which manufactured the Lycocell.

Lycocell is a cellulose produced from natural raw materials in an environmentally-friendly production process using eucalyptus wood from sustainable forests. The solvent used to obtain the fibres is said to be almost completely reused in the production cycle. According to a Freudenberg, the process has been given the European Award for the Environment.
