Mizuno remakes wave plate with castor beans

Sporting goods brand Mizuno has collaborated with Pebax to develop a more sustainable version of the Wave Rider 24 running shoe. The brand’s signature ‘Wave Plate’ is now made from Pebax Rnew polymer, which is derived from castor beans.

Pebax Elastomers, produced by Arkema in France and the US, are “block copolymers made up of rigid polyamide blocks and soft polyether blocks” that maintain the “toughness traditionally associated with polyamides and the flexibility/elasticity more often seen with polyethers/polyesters”.

Mizuno described the move to a bio-based plate as “an effort to reduce our carbon footprint while still providing you with high performance running shoes”.
