Tennis shoe innovations aim to meet players' need for speed

Tennis players Julia Görges, David Goffin and Álex de Miñaur have all played a role in helping sports brand ASICS develop a new shoe, Solution Speed FF2. The brand said the footwear is especially suited to athletes who put emphasis on acceleration in their efforts to cover the court.

Technological advancements ASICS pointed to on announcing the product include Dynawrap, a proprietary system of panels that cradle the foot and use the wearer’s own momentum to provide a good fit.

Another innovation is Flytefoam technology, which provides high levels of cushioning, but helps make the shoe lighter at the same time, and Flytefoam Propel, which is placed in the medial forefoot to give better control of weight in the forefoot. This, in turn, makes it easier for athletes to make a quick start.

Players who depend on speed in their game especially depend on the speed of their first few steps in any direction, forwards or backwards, left or right, ASICS said.

Commenting on this, David Goffin said: “The hardest thing as a player is trying to stay ahead of the ball and doing so while covering as much of the court as possible. The new Solution Speed FF2 features great advancements to help with quicker acceleration, better grip on court and also distributing weight better during quick and sharp direction changes. Every advantage your technical equipment gives you to perform better during matches is of utmost importance to players.”
