EOG offers solutions for single-use poly bags
The European Outdoor Group’s Single Use Plastic Project (SUPP) has published Poly Bag Standards as part of efforts to reduce the impacts of single use plastics throughout the value chain.

The document has been developed with input from producers, manufacturers, brands, retailers, waste intermediaries, recyclers and sustainable packaging specialists.

SUPP maintains the first priority is to remove unnecessary poly bags. Where they are deemed necessary (for instance, to provide perceived protection to delicate garments), partners have developed standards to minimise contaminants and ensure the value of the material is retained.

UK-based Equip Outdoor Technologies has designed a prototype ‘pillowcase’ poly bag that uses recycled and recyclable material, and incorporates a design that encourages users to open the bag without tearing it, allowing for its potential re-use.

Scott Nelson, EOG programme manager, said: “It’s still important to emphasise that the best possible poly bag is no poly bag at all, and we urge all businesses to prioritise the task of removing them from the entire value chain. However, we also recognise that some bags remain necessary, but these should be much better and should not be treated as single use. The SUPP Poly Bag Standards document has been written to start addressing both sides of that equation.”
