Tonello's 'radical paradigm shift'
Italian technology company Tonello has partnered fellow Vicenza-based design studio Wråd on a 100% Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)-certified cotton collection, dyed exclusively with plants and “natural elements”.
Tonello described the fruits of the collaboration, which it said was particularly geared towards a younger-skewing audience, as “unconventional, circular, responsible and sustainable”.
The company employed its Wake dyeing system, which uses only organic and fully compostable raw materials, throughout the process and emphasised how the line is free of chemicals hazardous to either humans or the environment.
Instead, the partners’ method of dyeing involves a brew of plants and vegetable waste, such as from dried flowers, berries, peels and roots, which are able to infuse the fabric “almost like preparing a herbal tea”, Tonello commented. It went on to describe the process as having the capacity to represent a “radical paradigm shift” for the fashion industry.
Due to the naturalness of the pigment, the resulting “manifesto-garments” are light-sensitive and are therefore expected to fade to less potent colour tones over time.
