Green light for BASF complex in Zhanjiang

19/07/2022

Chemicals group BASF has secured final approval to construct a new Verbund plant in Zhanjiang, in the west of China’s Guangdong province.

Verbund is a term BASF uses to describe a manufacturing complex that integrates a range of component factories.

BASF will invest up to €10 billion by 2030 to build the complex. Construction began there in 2020. It will be the group’s third-largest Verbund site worldwide after the complexes in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Antwerp, Belgium. The new site will be built in several phases and is expected to be fully operational by 2030. The first plant, for engineering plastics, is currently beginning production and a plant for the production of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) will come on stream in 2023.
