Ranra receives Zalando Sustainability Award
European fashion e-commerce platform Zalando has named outerwear brand Ranra, based between London and Reykjavik, as the fourth-ever recipient of its Zalando Sustainability Award, issued in partnership with Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW).

Ranra was singled out for its localised supply chain, with all fabrics – which the jury praised for their “unexpected” diversity of colour and texture – sourced from a single Italian supplier. It was also commended for the intentional longevity built into each article’s design, ranging from versatility to adaptability.

The brand is now entitled to roughly $20,400 (€20,000) in prize monies, in addition to a contract with the retailer to develop an exclusive collection rooted in “more sustainable” processes, from production to traceability and end-of-life recycling. Zalando has also committed to purchasing part of Ranra’s spring-summer 2023 offer, which showed during CPHFW in August.

“From the beginning, it has been our goal to create a brand that will have an impact on how the industry is currently manufacturing: intervening within existing production methods or adapting historic approached which offer more sustainable solutions,” commented co-founders Arnar Mar Jonsson and Luke Stevens. “It means the world to us to see our work being recognised by such a prestigious award.”

London-based Raeburn and Parisian label Mworks were the runners-up. Judges previously praised the former for its reworking of surplus materials to create function-first designs, while Mworks’s seamless knitting techniques and 100% post-consumer recycled polyester yarn Seaqual had ensured its own shortlisting earlier this summer.
