Kering-backed project explores microbial dyes

Austrian dye developer Vienna Textile Lab, which specialises in cultivating naturally occurring bacteria to produce colour, has joined hands with Italian fabric manufacturer Albini Group’s Albini Next think tank as part of a project aimed at formulating eco-friendlier methods for textile dyeing.

Specifically, the partners will look to harness the potential of microbial pigments when it comes to dyeing cotton and other natural fibres. They will be supported by luxury group Kering’s sustainably minded Material Innovation Lab throughout the undertaking.

Commenting on the collaboration, Vienna Textile Lab’s founder and chief executive, Karin Fleck, described her own company as an “enabler” of fashion brands’ sustainability goals. Working alongside Albini and Kering will mature the firm’s understanding of how its microbial dyes behave when applied to different fabrics, she said, helping it advance towards commercialisation of its techniques.
