Waterless dye processes among Kering competition finalists

Start-ups focusing on water reduction in the textiles sector have been named among finalists for the Kering Generation Award, an annual competition launched in 2018 by the luxury group and Plug and Play China, an accelerator platform.

After a selection process led by Kering’s sustainability experts and the China Advisory Council, 10 projects were chosen from 230 to participate in an acceleration camp, mentored by professors from Tsinghua University.

The 10 finalists include Daosheng Synbiology, which produces synthetic indigo using a proprietary bacterial strain; Exponent Envirotech, which has developed a waterless dyeing technology for cotton and other cellulose fibres;  Green Universe, which leverages Cyclopentasiloxane (D5) silicone oil as a dyeing medium to offer water-saving processes; and Jiayuan Biotech, which extracts chitosan fibre from discarded crab shells.

CAI Jinqing, president of Kering Greater China, said, “The start-ups have shown exceptional business insight, innovation and a strong commitment to sustainability. We look forward to strengthening our collaboration with local partners to further accelerate youth-driven innovation and enable seamless resource connections across the entire value chain.”

The winners will be announced on October 16, during Shanghai Fashion Week.
