Pledge from 3M to exit PFAS production by 2025
Performance materials developer 3M has announced that it will stop producing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and work to discontinue the use of PFAS across its product portfolio by the end of 2025.
It said its decision was based on “careful consideration and a thorough evaluation of the evolving external landscape”.
Chief executive of the group, Mike Roman, said PFAS can be made and used safely, but he said the “rapidly evolving landscape” in terms of regulatory and business demands had persuaded 3M to discontinue its production of all fluoropolymers, fluorinated fluids, and PFAS-based additive products.
The company said it would help facilitate “an orderly transition” for customers and fulfil current contractual obligations during the transition period. It said it had already reduced its use of PFAS over the past three years.
