Augsburg textile recycling initiative signs up Kelheim Fibres

27/02/2023

Viscose fibres developer Kelheim Fibres has become a member of Atelier Augsburg, a centre for research and development in the field of textile recycling set up by the Augsburg Technical Textiles Institute and the Augsburg University of Applied Sciences.

The initiative combines textile recycling processes and research inside a model factory. Research covers material analysis, sorting, preparation and sustainable product design. Comprehensive data collection and the use of artificial intelligence as well as innovative materials play a central role.

Kelheim Fibres said its aim was to advance sustainability and performance. Its project manager, Maik Thiel, said recycled cotton fibres are often short or of uneven length, which makes further processing of 100 % recycled material a challenge. He said the addition of speciality fibres from Kelheim would enable the production of high-quality new products, such as nonwovens.
