Pilots for traceable wool project in Vietnam prove successful

16/06/2023

Textiles traceability technology provider FibreTrace has given details of a project in Vietnam to apply its solutions to merino wool from Australia.

The technology works by applying of a GOTS-approved, scannable, luminescent pigment solution to fibres, allowing these to be traced across the supply chain.

Yarn manufacturer Fashion Enterprise and garment producer R&T Industry have worked together on the project and have successfully used FibreTrace up to spinning stage. They will now move ahead and test the effectiveness of the pigments through scouring stage before bringing products enhanced with FibreTrace to market in 2024.

In the pilot phases so far, approximately 200 kilos of Australian merino wool, donated by The Woolmark Company, have undergone testing at Indorama and has come through successfully, with the traceability of the fibres intact. The Woolmark Company plans to donate 2.4 tonnes of Australian merino wool fibre for the commercial pilot.

Fashion Enterprise and R&T Industry have said their aim is to offer traceable Australian merino wool, ensuring visibility and accountability “from spinner to shelf”. They said a number of clothing brands that they produce for have already expressed interest in having clothes made from traceable wool in their collections.
