GOTS targets small-scale actors with new pilot

Launched last year, the initiative has been designed to mitigate the various “administrative complexities and financial burdens” that could deter participation.
It aims to do so by introducing a "group" CSCS system of between eight and 30 facilities, each with 20 workers or less, that inherently reduces costings and other barriers to GOTS approval, the body said. Together, these operators can enter as single ‘certified entities’ following a comprehensive risk assessment.
Japanese textile manufacturer Sankei Meriyasu, founded 97 years ago, has already obtained GOTS certification as a result. Project coordinator, Yuko Nishino, shared: “This achievement resonates profoundly in Japan's textile industry, where cherished traditions, techniques and community connections are of importance."
On behalf of GOTS, managing director Rahul Bhajekar added: “Our pilot project is proving that the scheme works as intended, overcoming barriers and expanding opportunities.
“CSCS has the potential for substantial impact, empowering small operators in the organic textile supply chain and revolutionising GOTS certification...We look forward to refining and validating the requirements, in hopes of implementing it fully for all markets in the future.”
