CmiA celebrates success after three-year hiatus
Germany-based standard Cotton Made in Africa (CmiA) held a regional workshop in Lomé, the capital of Togo, after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

Two representatives from each cotton company were invited as well as Alexandra Perschau, CmiA head of the standards and outreach department, and Elena Wahrenberg, CmiA verification manager.

Ms Wahrenberg said: “The focus was on CmiA Standard Volume 4, as there are many new criteria and indicators. We are asking for more from our partners, and that means providing more support.”

The three-day workshop also included presentations on the CAR-iSMa project for soil enrichment, and WASH projects (water, sanitation, and hygiene).

Agribusiness SECO addressed soil erosion protection and the Beninese Organisation for the Promotion of Biological Agriculture (OBEPAB) demonstrated its food spray, which is extracted from indigenous plants and processed into a liquid for spraying on cotton fields. The spray nourishes the natural enemies of cotton pests so predators are close at hand when an infestation begins.

CmiA also recently celebrated the 80th birthday of Dr Michael Otto, chairman of the Otto Group and the founder of the Aid by Trade Foundation. “Thanks to him, protecting the planet has been one of the Otto Group’s corporate objectives since 1986,” it said.
