Sustainability success for Dystar despite challenges

23/08/2023
Singapore-based chemicals manufacturer DyStar has reduced greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 45% compared with a baseline year of 2011, including a 9% reduction during 2022.

The figures were included in its new Sustainability Report, covering 2022, in which it also shows a 52% reduction in wastewater production intensity, and a 24% reduction from 2021.

After a strong start to the year, the group was affected by worsening growth-inflation of the global economy. This resulted in a slowdown in demand, including in the textile and related products industry. The dye business faced challenges such as higher energy, transportation and labour costs.

However, CEO Eric Hopmann is positive: “One of the key opportunities ahead lies in striking the right balance between improving our environmental footprint and managing costs effectively. DyStar, with its established setup, is well-equipped to meet these challenges. However, the speed of implementation may depend on various factors that we will closely monitor and adapt to accordingly.

“In pursuit of becoming an environmental and innovation global leader, we will continue to explore opportunities for growth and development. By leveraging our expertise, expanding into differentiated product categories, and embracing bio technologies, we aim to address emerging market demands and meet the evolving needs of our customers.”
