More progress for Ambercycle as MAS Holdings signs up for Cycora

Apparel group MAS Holdings has joined forces with materials science company Ambercycle in a bid “to scale up textile-to-textile regeneration in the apparel industry”.

Their partnership centres on a three-year offtake agreement that will allow MAS to reserve capacity to use Ambercycle’s circular polyester material Cycora.

Los Angeles-based Ambercycle launched in 2015. It uses molecular regeneration technology to develop from end-of-life textiles polyester yarns for use in new garments. It uses the brand name Cycora for these yarns.

In 2022, it began to establish partnerships with fabric and apparel companies that wanted to use Cycora.

It took what chief executive, Shay Sethi, described as “a monumental leap forward” in 2023 when it announced an agreement with fashion group Inditex.

Investment of more than €70 million from the Spanish group will enable Amebrcycle to build its first commercial-scale production facility. It aims to start producing Cycora there in 2025, with Inditex taking significant volumes of the new yarns for use in its fashion collections in the three years that follow.

This new agreement will allow help Ambercycle “expedite efforts to reach commercial-scale production as quickly as possible” and will help MAS achieve one of its key objectives: to derive 50% of revenue from sustainable products by 2025.

“We are committed to revolutionising apparel product creation and manufacturing, and this collaboration is an important milestone for the industry to achieve circularity at scale,” said MAS Holdings director of group sustainable business, Nemanthie Kooragamage.
