Innovation in recycled down

Exhibiting in the innovation section of Performance Days, Untavia is a young Finnish start-up that presented a novel solution to preserve, and possibly increase, the fill power of recycled down. In a research project with Finish innovation institute VTT, the company founded six months ago has identified super critical carbon dioxide as a better solution to process down and feathers reclaimed from used bedding. This method causes less friction compared to the stringent washing processes applied to virgin and recycled down alike, and makes it possible to retain and at times even improve the fill power of the natural material. “Our waterless, toxic-free and frictionless process removes oils and grease and produces the highest quality recycled down,” Heikki Kärkkäinen, CEO and co-founder with COO Teemu Lemetti, told WSA.

The new technology has been validated at lab scale and the young company is now looking for investors to scale its process.
