Cranfield research proves Outlast benefits for clothing brand

Motorsport apparel brand Walero is celebrating more than ten years of partnership with heat management solutions provider Outlast.

Since its launch in 2014, Waterlo has used Outlast in baselayer garments to improve thermal comfort for motorsport drivers.

Working with a research team at Cranfield University, Waterlo has established that clothing containing Outlast can help wearers reduce heart-rate by up to 8%, improve breathing rates, reduce sweat by 40% and keep core-temperature increases to 0.6 degrees Celsius, compared to increases of 1.5 degrees that can occur with conventional clothing.

These are more than marginal gains, Waterlo said, and constitute measurable improvements that translate to better lap times, better focus, and better safety. It added that using Outlast-enhanced baselayers can help reduce post-race fatigue and fluid loss, helping drivers recover faster between races.

The brand’s founder and chief executive, Fiona James, said: “As a driver, you are operating under extreme pressure, mentally and physically. You are strapped into a fireproof suit, surrounded by electronics and heat, pushing your limits, lap after lap. You need to stay cool, sharp and safe.”
