Low impact gear for solar-powered race
German chemicals company Covestro has teamed up with recycled polyester producer Cyclone and fabric maker Huafeng, both based in China, to develop a low-impact kit for a solar racing team, Sonnenwagen Aachen. The German student team will be one of 50 participating in the 2025 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, a biannual 3,000-kilometer race across the Australian outback, which takes place this August. They will be racing solar-powered vehicles of their own design.

Naturally, Sonnenwagen Aachen team members were looking for a racing kit that aligned with their commitment to eco-responsible practices. Covestro’s partially bio-based polyurethane, Impranil CQ, has been used to make the products, present as a fabric coating and as a screen-printing ink. Cyclone supplied rPET yarns that are dope-dyed to further reduce their environmental footprint.
