New chapter for Spinnova
Finnish wood-based fibre producer Spinnova has bought all the Suzano Finland shares from Brazilian wood pulp group Suzano for €2.
This grants Spinnova full ownership of their joint venture, Woodspin, as well as the provider of raw material for manufacturing its fibre.
The company has developed a technique, based on suspension flows, to make textile fibres from micro-fibrillated cellulose from paper-grade wood pulp. It involves mechanically pulping the fibres and controlling the flow in such a way as to form a yarn without using any complex chemical processes.
The plan was that Suzano would operate a new production facility in Brazil, with the capacity to make 20,000 tonnes per year. However, last November, the companies announced a delay, and at the start of this year, the Brazilian group said it had “newly defined priorities”.
Operations at the Woodspin factory have ceased until further notice.
