Test for natural materials in extreme expedition

Explorer Mike Horn has announced a new technical partnership with The Woolmark Company. Woolmark will be a formal partner for a new expedition called ‘What’s Left?’.

On this multi-year journey, the Swiss explorer will travel through some of the world’s most extreme and rapidly changing environments.

Of interest to The Woolmark Company will be to see how well merino wool clothing, supplied by French brand Ayaq, performs “at the limits of human endurance and environmental exposure”.

The partners have said they will aim to demonstrate that natural materials can meet the technical demands of extreme expeditions.

Merino garments Mr Horn will wear will range from next-to-skin baselayers to wind- and water-resistant outer layers.

Different phases of the expedition will take place in the Arctic, the Amazon and Patagonia.

Following the expedition, Mike Horn will spend time in Australia, consulting with woolgrowers to document animal care practices, responsible land management, nature-positive practices aimed at protecting biodiversity and soils, and the role of natural fibre farmers in the textile supply chain.
