Outdoor Alliance: The fight isn’t over

07/01/2026

Threats to conservation and outdoor recreation use of public lands and waters in the US played a major role in galvanising the public to have a bigger voice than ever before around these issues, according to data from Outdoor Alliance, a coalition of outdoor recreation groups.

Throughout 2025, Outdoor Alliance’s constituency held more than 300 meetings with lawmakers and delivered more than 25 million messages to decision makers.

These efforts have played a major role in effecting policy change, said the coalition -  including spurring the rejection of potential large-scale public land sales last summer.

New bipartisan caucuses for conservation and public land stewardship have also formed in both the House and Senate, signalling broader support for making public lands and waters a legislative priority, it added.

Adam Cramer, CEO at the Outdoor Alliance, said: “In 2025, public lands have been at constant risk of being sold off, developed and underfunded. It has been incredible to see the dedication and commitment of the outdoor community in advocating for the places people love to get outside.”

However, he added, “The fight isn’t over.”

Outdoor Alliance includes American Whitewater, American Canoe Association, International Mountain Bicycling Association, Winter Wildlands Alliance, The Mountaineers, American Alpine Club and Surfrider Foundation.
