Novel MMCF derived from eggshell membranes
Pharma Foods International, a Japanese R&D company, presented a novel manmade cellulosic fibre at Première Vision Paris this week. Ovoveil is described as a hybrid fibre that integrates 10% hydrolised eggshell membranes into a regenerated cellulose fibre. “The company specialises in finding solutions for food waste,” Chie Azuma, manager of the Kyoto-based company told Sportstextiles. The fine membrane that lines the shell of chicken eggs is a cellulosic biomass resource, of which some 10,000 tonnes are generated yearly. The company has been working on this development for ten years, and has patented the process.

Clinical studies have found that Ovoveil has skin-friendly properties by enhancing the skin’s ability to retain moisture, a characteristic delivered by fabrics with 30% ovoveil fibre. “It is ideal for skin close clothing, and has also been used in the weft of jeans,” she said.

The fibres and fabrics shown on the booth were developed with industrial partners in Japan.
